PALACE OF EUMENES-II IN PERGAMUM

In front of the palace entrance lies a courtyard paved with smooth stone blocks. Flanking the courtyard are rooms once used by soldiers who were responsible for guarding the palace entrance. The andesite stone steps on the north side of the courtyard lead to the palace built during the reign of Eumenes II.

At the center of this peristyle palace, the courtyard is surrounded by interconnected living rooms. Archaeological research suggests that one of these rooms served as a chapel or cult space. Within the courtyard, the remains of a cistern were discovered, which once supplied water to the palace.

A central altar occupies the middle of the courtyard, and the southwestern corner contains the remnants of a fountain. On the north side, the palace’s largest room functioned as the main hall. Portions of the floor mosaics uncovered in the northeast rooms during early excavations are now exhibited in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
